U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis Questions Legality of U.S. Government Selling Bitcoin: Trump Has Explicitly Instructed Using These Assets to Build a U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve

BlockBeats News, January 6th, U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis stated, “Why is the U.S. government still selling Bitcoin when Trump has clearly indicated that these assets should be held to establish a U.S. strategic Bitcoin reserve? While other countries are increasing their Bitcoin holdings, we are squandering these strategic assets, which we cannot afford. I am deeply concerned about this report.”

Earlier reports indicated that on November 3, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice instructed the Marshals Service to sell the 57.55 Bitcoins paid in the Samourai Wallet developer’s plea deal through Coinbase Prime, amounting to approximately $6.37 million, potentially violating Executive Order 14233 signed by President Trump. The order mandates that Bitcoin obtained through criminal forfeiture should be included in the “National Strategic Bitcoin Reserve” and not be sold. Currently, the Bitcoin address balance is zero, indicating that the related assets may have been liquidated.
