The reason is that such assets are pseudo-anonymous, making it difficult to verify the identity of donors and posing risks to election integrity. The bill is currently in the first reading stage of the House of Commons.
The UK Labour Party has also recently stated that it will take “interim measures” to suspend political entities from accepting cryptocurrency donations until the relevant regulatory framework is improved to address foreign election interference risks. This move is seen as potentially directly impacting the funding source of the Reform Party. Nigel Farage’s leadership of the party has received substantial donations from the crypto industry.
