Hyperliquid Founder Interview: Single-Parent Household Fosters Independent Self-Taught Personality, Early Display of Prodigy Scholar Talent

BlockBeats News, April 14th, Recently, Hyperliquid founder Jeff revealed his growth story in an interview with Colossus magazine under Forbes.

Jeff grew up with his younger sister on the Redwood Coast between San Francisco and Palo Alto. His parents were both Chinese immigrants and divorced when he was in third grade. His father left the family. His mother was an accountant and had to work overtime during tax season. Jeff recalled, “I could tell some people were wealthier than us, but I never resented it. Going out to play wasn’t expensive.”

Jeff’s school didn’t have an atmosphere of academic competition. Although his mother verbally said she would push him, she didn’t. No one pushed him to do anything until he was a teenager. He played outside, went to school, came home, and played some more every day. In eighth grade, a chance encounter sparked his desire to learn. After that, he embarked on the road to academic success: self-studied all competition questions in ninth grade, entered the USA Math Olympiad training camp (Top 50 in the USA), won the USA Physics Olympiad gold medal at 18, and was ranked 24th in the world.

He then entered Harvard University on a full scholarship, and in the winter of his junior year, he participated in Hudson River Trading’s inaugural internship program with Scott Wu. At that time, there were 10 interns selected. Hudson River Trading is one of the world’s most successful quant trading firms. Among these 10 interns were also Alexandr Wang, who later founded Scale AI, and Jesse Zhang, who founded Decagon. This internship was conducted in the form of a three-week competition, and in each round of the competition, Wu and Jeff took first and second place.
