Middle East War Spills Over to NATO Member States! Experts Say Collective Defense Trigger Still High

BlockBeats News, March 5th, earlier today, NATO’s air defense system intercepted a missile flying from Iran to Turkey. In response to American and Israeli strikes, Iran has been targeting multiple countries. It has attacked the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Its northern neighbor Azerbaijan said on Thursday that an Iranian drone had injured two civilians.

Distant countries have also been affected, with drone strikes this week hitting a UK airbase in Cyprus, and Turkey saying on Wednesday that a missile flying towards its airspace was shot down by NATO air defense and missile defense systems. Both countries are NATO members bound by the Article 5 treaty, which involves collective defense if any member is attacked.

NATO members have already been dealing with the alliance’s eastern flank in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The alliance’s European members have depleted stocks in supporting Ukraine, progress in replenishing stocks has been slow, and commitments to increase defense spending have faced obstacles.

Experts say triggering Article 5 “just because a missile was shot down is a bit of an overreach.” But these events show that Iran may be expanding the scope of its “battle for survival,” with the real concern being the possibility of prolonged internal turmoil in Iran leading to new regional instability, thereby exacerbating security risks in the Middle East.
