WSJ: Trump Considers Partial Withdrawal of U.S. Forces from NATO Countries

BlockBeats News, April 9th, according to WSJ reports, U.S. government officials revealed that the Trump administration is considering a plan to punish some NATO member countries that he believes did not support the U.S. and Israel during the Iran war. The proposal includes withdrawing U.S. troops from NATO members that do not provide support and redeploying them to countries that are more supportive of U.S. military actions.

This proposal is far less severe than Trump’s recent threat to completely withdraw the U.S. from NATO, as he does not have the authority to do so without congressional approval. The plan has been circulating among senior government officials in recent weeks and has garnered support. It is currently in the preliminary stages and is one of several punitive measures against NATO being discussed at the White House.

Previously, the White House stated that Trump believes NATO has not passed the “test” and will discuss “withdrawal” with Rutte. According to two government officials, in addition to troop redeployment, the plan may also include closing at least one U.S. military base in a European country, possibly Spain or Germany.

Countries like Poland, Romania, Lithuania, and Greece could benefit as they are seen as supporters. The plan could result in more U.S. troops being deployed closer to the Russian border, likely provoking Moscow. (Sina Finance)
